Parents of children with learning challenges face substantial barriers to getting the supports and placements their kids need in the public educational system. Sometimes, it can seem overwhelming and the urge to argue or become inflexible at team meetings is real. While not all situations can be solved with diplomacy or collaboration, legal solutions should not be entered into without serious consideration.

Currently, many serious conflicts involving special education are mediated at the BSEA with legal representation, prior to partaking in a full blown hearing. Those which continue on to hearing, culminate in decisions heavily in favor or the school district. Parents should do everything they can to obtain what they need for their loved ones at the Team meeting level whenever possible.
